Olympic Museum, Athens

Our entry for a design competition, in partnership with Maxim Borschchevskiy, an architect from Kazan, Russia.

The building was lifted up to provide pedestrian access from the adjacent streets. The building wraps around the plaza to provide shade and space for recreation with plenty of seating. This organization of public space refers to the ancient Agora and Stoa. With breezes passing through the underside of the building, outdoor comfort is possible in the shaded open spaces even on hot summer days.

In the museum, visitors walk through the six galleries in chronological order of Olympic history. Terraces on the second level open up to the gallery space that provides visual connections to the square below and, more dramatically, framed views of the Acropolis, Zappeion, and Temple of Zeus. The building collects rainwater, which is reused in the pools, and has solar collectors on all south faces to provide shade and produce electricity to run the building.
