Central Library, Madison, WI

The growing dependence on digital information is not helping the cause of books. We, however, also embrace the digital age, and have done so with the design for the new library. Research into upcoming systems employed by new libraries reveals a growing digital presence. More and more people are reading on electronic devices. The internet now allows us to access information anytime, anywhere. Libraries have to work very hard to keep up with the web.

The digital arrangement in the new system allows for more public spaces within the collection areas. The library lets in as much natural light as possible, and provides visual connections between different public spaces with separated functions. There is a “book bar,” a space for library users to meet and talk to librarians, scholars, etc. Added to this is the presence of a bookstore, cafe, and rooftop restaurant – for revenue. The rest of the space is allotted to outdoor landscape.
